What is a URL slug?

A URL slug is the part of a web address that identifies a specific page in readable words, usually the last segment of the path, such as spring-sale in example.com/offers/spring-sale.
The slug is the final segment of the path:
https://example.com/blog/how-to-track-clicks
                           └── slug
Good slugs

What to aim for.

Short and descriptive

A few words that say what the page is about.

Lowercase

Paths can be case-sensitive, so one casing avoids duplicates.

Hyphens between words

Search engines read a hyphen as a space. Underscores join words together.

No filler

Drop articles and stop words if the meaning survives.

Plain letters and digits

Avoid accents, symbols and spaces that need encoding.

Stable

Changing a slug breaks links, so redirect the old one if you must.

Tools

Generating one.

The URL slug generator turns any title into a clean slug, including Cyrillic and accented letters, with an optional length limit and stop-word removal.

FAQ

Common questions

Does the slug affect rankings? +

A little. It is a small relevance hint, and it makes the URL readable, which can help clicks.

Should the slug match the page title? +

It should reflect it, but shorter. Remove punctuation and filler words.

Can I use non-Latin characters? +

You can, but they are percent-encoded when copied, which makes links long. Transliterating to Latin letters is usually cleaner.

What if I need to change a slug? +

Set up a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one.
