How does an Add to Calendar link work?
A normal link with the event details in its parameters.
A Google Calendar link points to calendar.google.com/calendar/render with action=TEMPLATE and the event as parameters: text for the title, dates for the start and end in UTC, plus details and location. Opening it shows a prefilled event that the person can save with one click.
Because it is just a link, it works in emails, on websites, in chat messages and as a QR code on a poster. For people who use Apple Calendar or Outlook, an .ics file does the same job.
Dates in the link are written in UTC, so the event appears at the right time in whichever time zone the visitor's calendar uses.
Common questions
Will it show the right time for people in other time zones? +
Yes. The time is stored as a moment in UTC, and each person's calendar shows it in their own time zone.
How do I make an all-day event? +
Tick all-day. The link then uses dates without times, and the end date is handled for you.
Can I add recurring events? +
Not with this tool. A recurrence rule can be added by hand with the recur parameter after the link is created.
Does the .ics file work everywhere? +
It opens in Apple Calendar, Outlook, and most other calendar apps. Google Calendar can import it too.
